Dimples can help brighten a smile. It makes the smile all the sweeter and also makes the face seem smaller and slimmer.

A natural dimple is formed when there is a small defect in the facial musculature, namely the buccinators muscles. For patients without natural dimples, it is now possible to create dimples in a simple, pain free procedure in the clinic. Further, patients can fashion the dimple to the exact length and position according to the patient’s desire.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes around 30 minutes. A small incision is made in the inside of the cheek and an absorbable suture is then passed to create the dimple. At first, the dimpling is seen even without smiling. However after a few weeks, the dimple is only present when smiling or moving the face. The result is permanent in nature as scarring causes a permanent dimple even after the suture is absorbed.

Post-operatively, patients can expect slight bruising and swelling at the cheek. This will likely last for 2-4 days. Patients are prescribed oral antibiotics as well as antibiotic mouth gurgle. Patients are also encouraged to take soft diet for about 1 week after the plastic surgery.
