What Is Breast Augmentation?

Have you ever wished for fuller breasts, improved symmetry, or a more balanced silhouette—especially after weight changes or pregnancy? While the reasons for considering breast augmentation vary, the goal is often the same: to feel more confident and comfortable in your own body.

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that enhances breast size, shape, symmetry, and fullness using breast implants or fat transfer. As a cosmetic procedure, it focuses primarily on aesthetic enhancement. It may also be part of breast reconstruction following medical treatments such as breast cancer surgery. However, it is important to note that breast augmentation does not correct significant breast sagging or nipple and areola malposition on its own. In such cases, it may be combined with other procedures, such as a breast lift, to achieve optimal results.

What Are the Types of Breast Augmentation?

There are several breast augmentation techniques available, each designed to suit different goals, anatomy, and preferences. During your consultation, your surgeon will recommend the approach best suited to you.

Breast Implant Augmentation

This technique enhances breast size and shape by placing silicone or saline implants either behind the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle. The choice of implant depends on your anatomy, lifestyle, and desired look.

  • Silicone Implants

    – Filled with cohesive silicone gel, these implants closely mimic the softness and movement of natural breast tissue, offering a smooth and natural feel.
  • Saline Implants

    – Inserted as empty shells and filled with sterile saltwater during surgery, these implants allow precise volume adjustment, helping achieve balanced size and improved symmetry.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

Fat transfer breast augmentation uses your own body fat to create a subtle and natural increase in breast volume. Fat is gently harvested from areas such as the abdomen or thighs through liposuction, purified, and then carefully injected into the breasts. This method is ideal if you prefer a modest enhancement without implants and appreciate the added benefit of body contouring in the donor areas.

Common techniques include:

  • Traditional Fat Grafting

    – Fat is harvested, purified, and reinjected into the breasts to create a soft, natural-looking enhancement.
  • Expansion Vibration Lipofilling (EVL)

    – An advanced approach that uses vibration-assisted injection to improve fat distribution and potentially enhance fat survival.
  • Cell-Assisted Lipotransfer (CAL)

    – This technique enriches the fat graft with stem cells before injection, aiming to support better fat retention and longer-lasting outcomes.

Hybrid Breast Augmentation

Hybrid augmentation blends the structure of an implant with the softness of fat transfer to create fuller, more contoured breasts with a natural feel. This approach offers flexibility in shaping, smoothing and fine-tuning the final result. The two main variations are:

  • Implant-Dominant Hybrid Augmentation

    – The implant provides most of the volume, while fat is added to smooth contours, soften implant edges, and improve symmetry.
  • Fat-Dominant Hybrid Augmentation

    – A larger volume of fat is used to create softness and natural texture, with minimal implant support for shape or projection where needed.

Revision Breast Augmentation

Revision breast augmentation is performed to correct, refine, or update the results of a previous breast surgery. This may be done for aesthetic, comfort, or medical reasons.

  • Implant Replacement

    – An existing implant is removed and replaced with a new one, often in a different size, shape, or material.
  • Implant Removal (Explantation)

    – The implant is removed entirely without replacement, usually based on personal preference or medical considerations.
  • Capsulectomy or Capsulotomy

    – Scar tissue around the implant is partially or fully removed to relieve tightness, discomfort, or distortion.
  • Pocket Modification

    – In this approach, the implant pocket is reshaped or resized to improve positioning, stability, and symmetry.

Who Is Eligible For Breast Augmentation?

A thorough consultation is essential to determine whether breast augmentation is right for you. Ideal candidates generally:

  • Are in good physical health
  • Do not smoke, or are willing to stop
  • Have unevenly sized or shaped breasts
  • Have fully developed breasts
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Do not have breast cancer or abnormal mammogram findings
  • Have realistic expectations

What Are the Benefits of Breast Augmentation?

Enhanced Breast Symmetry– Breast augmentation can correct unevenness, creating a more symmetrical appearance.

Curvier Silhouette– For women with naturally small breasts, implants can add volume, creating a more desired curve and enhancing overall body proportions.

Increased Confidence– Increased fullness and improved symmetry can help make women more confident and comfortable in a wider variety of clothing styles.

Restored Youthfulness– Breastfeeding and ageing can cause breasts to lose volume and firmness. Breast augmentation (sometimes done alongside a breast lift) can address these concerns, creating a more youthful appearance.

We provide a range of procedures to enhance the appearance of one’s breasts with beautiful and natural-looking outcomes.

What Happens During Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation remains one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in Singapore. Two key considerations when planning surgery are your natural breast measurements and skin laxity. To maintain a balanced and natural outcome, patients are generally advised not to increase more than two cup sizes beyond what the surgeon recommends.

After surgery, it is normal to experience temporary pain, tightness, and discomfort. These symptoms are usually manageable with prescribed medication and improve significantly within the first week. Implants typically take five to six months to fully settle into a natural position and feel.

Implants and fat grafting are the preferred and approved methods for breast augmentation. Breast fillers, however, are prohibited by the Ministry of Health due to risks such as infection, cyst formation, and chronic pain.

How Is Breast Augmentation in Singapore Done?

In Singapore, the most common methods of breast augmentation are breast implants and fat transfer. For implant augmentation, the two most common breast implants are saline and silicone breast implants. Generally, silicone breast implants are preferred as they feel more natural.

Motiva breast implants, the latest generation of silicone breast implants, adapt their shape to your body movements to achieve a natural-looking effect. Incisions may be placed in the armpit, around the areola, or along the inframammary fold, depending on your anatomy and surgical plan. Implants can be positioned either above or below the chest muscle.

For fat transfer, fat is harvested from areas such as the abdomen or thighs, processed to concentrate viable fat cells, and then reinjected into the breasts. Typically, one session allows an increase of about one bra cup size. As fat grafting is highly technique-dependent, the surgeon’s experience plays a crucial role in achieving long-lasting results.

Breast augmentation can also be combined with procedures such as a breast lift or nipple–areola reduction to create a more balanced and proportionate outcome. With modern techniques, most surgeries are completed within two hours, and initial recovery usually takes just a few days.

FAQs About Breast Augmentation

Can I breastfeed after undergoing breast augmentation?

Most women are able to breastfeed normally after breast augmentation. In many cases, the implants are placed beneath the chest muscle or through incisions that minimise disruption to milk ducts. However, individual anatomy and surgical technique matter, so your surgeon will discuss this with you during your consultation.

What is the difference between a breast augmentation and a breast lift?

Breast augmentation increases breast size and fullness using implants or fat transfer. A breast lift (mastopexy), on the other hand, raises and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning the nipple. If you have both volume loss and sagging, these procedures can be performed together for optimal results.

How long do breast augmentation results last?

Breast augmentation results are long-lasting, but they are not considered lifetime procedures. Implants typically last many years, often 10–15 years or longer, depending on the type and condition of the implant. Natural ageing, weight changes, and pregnancy may affect breast appearance over time.

How much does breast augmentation cost in Singapore?

The cost of breast augmentation in Singapore varies depending on the technique used, type of implant or fat transfer, and the complexity of the procedure. A personalised quotation will be provided after a consultation, once your goals and surgical plan are clearly defined.

What should I avoid after a breast augmentation?

After surgery, you should avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and chest-focused activities for several weeks. Sleeping on your stomach and wearing underwire bras should also be avoided until your surgeon advises otherwise. Following post-operative instructions closely helps support proper healing and optimal results.
