Traditional Transaxillary Breast Augmentation
Transaxillary breast augmentation is nothing new. This method entails a small incision in the
deepest crease of the armpit through which the breast implant will be inserted. One advantage of this technique is that the resulting scars are not cosmetically obvious. Instead, they
are well-hidden within the crease of the armpit and will eventually fade.
Unfortunately, transaxillary breast augmentation carries complications, one of which is bleeding
problems, causing hematoma formation. There is also a chance of implant malposition that may
lead to laterally displaced implants. Both are essentially due to the fact that previously,
transaxillary breast augmentation was a “blind” procedure performed without direct
visualization.
Endoscopic Transaxillary Breast Augmentation
With this in mind, Dr Leo has adopted a new technique to greatly reduce such complications. This
method, called endoscopic transaxillary breast augmentation uses a custom-made endoscope for the
procedure.
After the incision is made in the armpit, the endoscope is inserted. The endoscope allows for
accurate visualization of the dissection pocket. Further, it allows visualization of the
pectoralis major muscles. This muscle can now be accurately separated, minimizing the incidences
of laterally displaced implants of the past. It also allows visualization of any blood vessels,
hence, accurate hemostasis can be carried out. This results in a safer procedure with better
cosmetic outcomes.
Endoscopic transaxillary breast augmentation is performed under sedation and takes around 1.5 to
2 hours to complete. This is a day surgery procedure. Absorbable sutures are used to close the
wound hence no suture removal is necessary.
Patients can expect bruising and swelling to last for around 1 week. Special pressure garment
will be prescribed for the patients post-procedure. This will be worn for around 6 weeks.
Patients should refrain from physical activities for around 3-4 weeks post-procedure. Scar
management including the use of scar and lightening creams will be prescribed post-procedure.
Laser scar removal can be started 1 month post-procedure, if necessary, for optimal scar
management.
