Dark Eye Circles Treatment

Dark eye circles are a very common complaint among patients in Singapore. Due to its effect of making a person look tired all the time, many believe that dark eye circles are simply caused by lack of sleep and should subside with enough rest.

In actuality, dark eye circles are multifactorial in origin. Common causes include congestion of blood vessels, hyperpigmentation, and a hollowing effect from prominent tear troughs or eyebags.

There is no one method to solve dark eye circles. Hence, most patients require a multimodality approach.

At our clinic, we use a combination of lightening creams and laser therapy to treat hyperpigmentation and blood vessel congestion that causes dark eye circles. Our creams are specifically formulated to target these problematic areas, while laser therapy further breaks up the dark pigments in the lower eyelid skin.

Patients with prominent tear troughs, however, will benefit from volumization in the lower eye area. This can be done through fat or filler injections. For dermal fillers, small particle-sized fillers are injected deep into the skin to prevent the Tyndell effect, a visible bluish discoloration in the skin resulting from superficial filler injection. Typically, 1mL of fillers is sufficient to treat both eyes.

Fat injections involve harvesting fats from other parts of the body, then reinjecting it under the eyes via a microcannula. This adds volume to hollow area and prevents lumpiness over the lower eyelids. The procedure is done under local anesthesia.

Lower blepharoplasty, which involves removing excess skin and fat, or repositioning fat in the lower eyelids, is recommended for patients with prominent eyebags.
